Apple just did something it almost never does: it refreshed the Mac mini before the big iPhone event, in an unusually timed autumn surprise. And the headline isn't just a new chip — it's that Apple has, for the first time, priced a computer around AI compute rather than raw desktop horsepower. The sub-$600 Mac mini era is officially over, replaced by a $899 machine that's built first and foremost to run models locally.

If you've been watching the local-AI crowd, the democratization streak over the last 18 months was remarkable. Here's what changed, what it means, and which argument actually matters for local AI: the Lamborghini, or the highway.

M4 → M6: what's actually new

Apple's claims: up to 4× the AI performance of the M4, 2× graphics and storage, and a 40% faster CPU thanks to the new super cores and a first-ever 2-nanometer process. On LLM prompt processing specifically, they quote a 4.8× jump in LM Studio over the previous generation. It's Apple's first M6 computer, and it's clearly built to be punched-in-the-side local AI worker: the GPU now ships Neural Accelerators named each core, and the dual 16-core Neural Engine doubles the raw AI throughput.

There's a Wi-Fi 7 + Bluetooth 6 upgrade and the base Ethernet jumps to 2.5 Gb (10Gb optional). Ports carry over: three Thunderbolt 4, two front USB-C, HDMI, headphone.

The pricing story: the sub-$600 desktop era is over

Here's where it stings. The M4 Mac mini launched at $599 and the recent M4 512GB base was selling at $799. The new M6 base — 16GB RAM / 256GB storage — starts at $899, a $300 jump over its M4 launch price and a $100 real-world step up from the recent M4 base. Apple turned the M4 $599 config but the "cheap Mac" is no longer cheap.

The bandwidth argument: Lamborghini, meet no highway

You raised the sharpest question in this whole story: for local AI, is GPU bandwidth or memory size more crucial? The answer — and the M6 mini is a perfect demonstration — is bandwidth.

Every time a local model generates a token, those weights have to be pulled out of memory, shuttled to the compute units, do their math, and the result streamed through the bus. No matter how fast your GPU or Neural Engine is, token throughput is capped by how fast you can move weights, not by how fast you can compute them. You can own a Lamborghini of a GPU, but if the memory bus is a narrow country lane, you'll sit in traffic on every single token.

The classic trap is stacking RAM without the bus to feed it — a giant memory pool on a narrow pipe just sits idle. Buy the bandwidth first, then size the memory to your model.

Who's it for?

As a platform, the M6 Mac mini is Apple finally shipping a desktop that's honest about what the AI era needs. For devs running local agents (OpenClaw, Hermes, and the exploding open-weight scene), the combined Neural Accelerator + 170GB/s bus makes it the best "pocket server" yet released — at the cost of a big price step.

The verdict: if you already own an M4 mini and just do light tasks, skip it. If you tinker with local AI at all — or are buying your first Mac mini thinking "AI computer" — the M6 is the machine for you, and the $899 is the line the industry is getting comfortable with.
